Hey lovelies ! Thought that it was time for a new post. I'm thinking of starting a series of what not to do when going natural. I don't know how often I would do a post but I will start today with one thing that EVERY natural should avoid......NOT TRIMMING YOUR ENDS ! In fact, this goes for non-naturals as well.
I know, I know, all of us want to retain length and grow our hair so why would we cut it right ?
Actually, not regularly trimming those ends can do just the opposite of allowing your hair to grow. The ends of our hair follicles are exposed and therefore, they recieve a lot more wear-and-tear. The most common result of this is split ends. No one wants those ! By trimming, you can avoid/get rid of these pesky visitors.
So, how often should you trim ? This depends on the state of your hair. It is recommended that you trim once every 4-8 weeks. Not everyone's hair is the same however. I personally let my hair talk to me. Trimming also makes your hair look fuller and healthier without those dead ends. Ever see those scraggly, thin, and dead looking ends? Yeah, it's time for a trim ladies ! When I feel like it's been a long time since my last trim or when I see my hair is struggling, I trim.
How much should you cut off ? Well, again, this all depends on your hair. You may need to cut off more depending on how bad your ends are. The longer you wait to cut those ends, ultimately, the more you will have to cut off. In general, I cut off about half an inch or less when I trim.
Who should do the trimming? For the most part, I would say that it is best to let the pros handle it. You don't wanna butcher your hair that you've worked so hard to maintain right? However, if you're good with a pair of shears, go for it. Some people, like me, do not like to have others touch their hair, in which case I would say take it slow at first and make sure to get a good pair of hair cutters. Side Note: Don't use dull scissors or anything else besides scissors made to cut HAIR. They are made to be extra sharp and produce a clean cut. Dull scissors can fray your ends and actually PRODUCE split ends ! Yikes !
To recap: I suggest working a regular trim into your hair maintenance schedule. You will retain your length and get better looking, healthier hair.
